2008 Winter Newsletter
Dear Colleagues,
We are one
year away from our next meeting in Cape Town, South Africa and want to thank our
past presidents Kiyoshi Koyano and Regina Mericske-Stern for their dedication
and commitment in guiding the College and hosting the very successful Fukuoka
meeting, with its excellent scientific program and many exciting social events.
We would
like to support their comments that internationalization is one of the many
positive aspects of our College We recognize that it embraces communication, an
attempt for global cultural and social understanding, and a global view of the
broad discipline of prosthodontics. Internationalization also raises challenges
of global standards and professional interaction:
·
Our growing
international group meets every two years. In the time between, there are no
structured contacts, communication is limited and new members may not have
further involvement in the College. It may appear that the ICP is on stage in
the extravaganza of its scientific meetings every two years, but then
“disappears”. Members may question whether, for this reason, ICP has an impact
on world dentistry and prosthodontics.
·
Prosthodontics, unlike
other disciplines of dentistry, is characterized by its sub-disciplines; some of
which have become recognized specialties with their own associations and
meetings. The focus of interest may as a result, vary widely among ICP members
who may have varying commitments and standards.
·
Prosthodontics embraces
biology (mouth and body) and oral rehabilitation. It combines and unifies these
aspects recognizing that materials and technical quality have a strong impact on
their biological responses and long-term health of oral tissues.
·
Socioeconomic and
demographic trends worldwide, increasingly influence prosthodontic services
available for our patients. This may lead to different conceptual and
professional directions as a reality for prosthodontics. On a global scale, many
patients will not benefit from new developments and treatment opportunities.
As
providers of oral and care, we need to understand each patient’s values,
expectations and behaviors regarding prosthodontic therapy. It is a major
challenge for the ICP to integrate these many aspects of prosthodontics in our
scientific meetings. Members would appreciate the goal of the ICP as providing a
platform for discussion, understanding and sharing of knowledge.
The ICP
Board and Standing Committees continue to be active, and debate issues that are
brought to your attention. Our officers and committee members have also accepted
the challenge to strengthen and
collect information on teaching and education in prosthodontics at graduate
level. This led to the development of a Young eductators’ workshop, initiated
and prepared with enthusiasm by George Zarb, which will be held for the second
time in Karlsruhe, Germany. We are confident that these workshops will provide
new and enlightening perspectives for young professional teachers.
A future
goal of the ICP may be greater involvement with local dental activities. The
International Journal of Prosthodontics
is well recognized worldwide and we are proud of its success and appreciate the
inputs and innovative developments of our editor. Many readers of the journal
may not associate the journal with the ICP, which needs greater exposure and
recognition; the journal is an ideal platform for promoting the ICP.
The ICP's new dynamic
web site where members can update their personal information and review and/or
pay their annual dues continues to be an asset. Members also have the option to
change their contact information including their personal image on the web site.
Please visit our new web site and update your personal information. More
importantly… encourage your colleagues to
join our College.
In closing,
we enthusiastically encourage all our colleagues to attend the next ICP meeting
in Cape Town, South Africa.
Yours sincerely,
Yours sincerely,
Co-Presidents

Dr. Iven Klineberg - Dr. Jaime Gil

Cape Town, South Africa
September 11-13, 2009
We are making plans to meet in Cape Town, South Africa (September 11-13, 2009). Our conference site will be located on the Waterfront. Situated between Robben Island and Table Mountain in the heart of Cape Town's working harbor, the Waterfront has become South Africa's most visited destination. Set against a backdrop of magnificent sea and mountain views, exciting shopping and entertainment venues are intermingled with imaginative world-class hotels and harbor attractions.. We invite you and your guests to discover the experience... Make plans now and mark your calendar to join the ICP in Cape Town, SA.
Cape Town is the Mother City of Africa, and the Western Cape is an area which is regarded as one of the most beautiful regions in the world. The City is a rare cultural gem, resulting from the amalgamation of Indonesian, French, Dutch, British and German settlers, the local Bushman and Hottentot tribes and the Bantu tribes from the north.
The impressive presence of Table Mountain, flanked by the legendary Devil’s Peak and historical Signal Hill, stands proudly above the city. Beautiful white sandy beaches along a peaceful coastline frame the Cape Peninsula, which is famed for its unique floral kingdom, bountiful rivers, dams and magnificent countryside. The surrounding area extends far into the wine lands, green in summer and red-gold in autumn.
Cape Town boasts a multitude of entertainment, ranging from outdoor activities and adventures in the sun to a roaring night life under neon signs. The vast range of shopping opportunities includes haggling with shop keepers at Greenmarket Square Flea Market, as well as breezing through sophisticated and stylish shopping malls. The huge variety of restaurants reflects the multi-cultured history of the Cape and caters to everyone’s taste, from fast-food outlets and casual to the chic and very elegant.
Cape Town provides a setting for many scenic wonders, magnificent seascapes and panoramic vistas. The beautiful coastal areas of Camps Bay, Clifton, Llandudno, Bantry Bay, Hout Bay and Blouberg surround the breathtaking tranquility of the wine lands, Constantia, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franshhoek.
Cape
Town is a city of culture, built on a history that is reflected in the
architecture, cuisine, music and dance. Together with a warm summer and
temperate winter climate and a friendly community, the Western Cape is an
ideal destination throughout the year.
African Safari

After our meeting in Cape Town will be a wonderful opportunity to take that African Safari you have always dreamed of. You must come to Africa at least once in your life. October of 2009 is that time. Travel with your friends and colleagues to the African bush. The ICP is currently researching post conference tour packages to Kruger National Park and/or other locations for your consideration.

2007, Fukuoka, Japan
The 12th Meeting of the ICP was held in Fukuoka, southern Japan, under Co-Presidents Kiyoshi Koyano and Regina Mericske-Stern. Known as the ‘Gateway City’, Fukuoka is closer to Shanghai than to Tokyo and just a three hour ferry ride from Pusan, Korea. This thriving city complex of some 5 million people is positioned on the northern extremity of Japan’s southern volcanic island. For two days before the Meeting Councillors and Officers had been hard at work with their deliberations, oblivious to the incessant rain. As if by magic the skies cleared as delegates began to arrive for the conference. The blue skies proved a portent for things to come.

Nearly forty countries were represented
including a welcome delegation from nearby China. The Scientific
Programme, chaired by Steven Eckert and Jaime Gil, was equally broad in scope
with 75 Oral Presentations and 104 Poster Presentations, plus 15 Young
Prosthodontist Poster Presentations, all of a very high standard. These
Poster and YPA competitions were so closely matched in quality that the
Scientific Committee was hard pushed even to make a short list to simplify the
tasks of the hard pressed judges. The First Place for the YPA was awarded
to Ben Lee (Sydney, Australia) and the Second Place was awarded to
Matjaz Golobic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) both excellent
presentations. The First Place for the Poster Awards was presented
to Anthia Bakopoulou (Thessaloniki, Greece) and the Second Place awarded to
Dubravka Knezovic-Zlataric

George Zarb, Past President, and stalwart member of the ICP, opened the Scientific Programme with an address entitled ‘Prosthodontics at a Crossroads’ while another ICP stalwart and Founding President Harold Preiskel, provided the closing address entitled ‘Prosthodontic Paradigms’. Both the opening and closing mornings were concentrated in one lecture hall while during the rest of a very busy conference delegates could choose between one of two parallel sessions. The timekeeping proved to be immaculate, a testimony to the skills of the speakers and of the Co-Chairmen. While implant Prosthodontics occupied much of the allocated time conventional Prosthodontics was not overlooked. A well attended and important Focus Session devoted to Evidence Based Dentistry aroused a lively and fruitful discussion.

The social events were marked by originality and attention to detail. Our excursion to a nearby shrine and to the National Museum was topped by a splendid dinner – the first of its kind to be held in the stunning architectural surrounds of this modernistic building. Delegates were enchanted not only by the exquisite food, but by the dancing of delightful Japanese children followed up with a breathtaking example of drum skills and technology. Towards the end of the proceedings delegates were seen to be dancing in line to the tune of Japanese rhythms clapping specially produced wooden spoons above their heads. Small wonder that it took all the skills of the Co-Presidents to persuade the delegates to go back to their hotel. The formal banquet followed traditional lines, but with Japanese food and Japanese entertainment. It was only during the speeches that we learnt that our Co-President Kiyoshi Koyano had such close relationships with both the Mayor and the local High Priest.

Post conference excursions included a trip to Hita, to witness the charm and architecture of ‘old Japan’, followed by a traditional Japanese meal served on a flat-bottomed boat, and a three day excursion to Kyoto via the Bullet Train. New Presidents, Jaime Gil and Iven Klineberg were duly installed and the ever strengthening ICP looks forward to its next gathering in Cape Town.
